Titans Commit Five Errors, Strand 14 in Loss to ASU
Feb. 23, 2001 – Fullerton, Calif.

Nick Walsh had a go-ahead two-run pinch-hit single in the seventh and Bryce Kartler struck out the last two batters of the game with the tying runs in scoring position to lift the fifth-ranked Arizona State baseball team to a 5-3 nonconference win over No. 18 Cal State Fullerton at Goodwin Field Friday night.

The Sun Devils improved to 13-2 on the season. Cal State Fullerton, which committed a season-high five errors and stranded 14 base runners, fell to 6-7.

Arizona State’s first four runs were unearned and the Titans’ actually lowered their team ERA to 2.65.

Drew Friedberg (1-0), who shut out the Titans on one hit in three innings of middle relief work, picked up his first win in more than a year and Kartler, who got all three outs in the ninth, earned his first save. Fullerton starter Jon Smith allowed two unearned runs on four hits in five innings but had a no-decision. Chad Cordero (1-2) allowed three runs (one earned) over the final four innings.

Arizona State grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second. Jonah Martin drove in Dennis Wyrick with the first run and Jeremy West scored when Fullerton shortstop Mike Martinez misplayed a ground ball off the bat of Chris Duffy.

The Titans scored once in the second and tacked on a pair of runs off Arizona State starter and All-American Jon Switzer in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. Kyle Boyer singled to lead off the fourth, moved to second on a sacrifice by Aaron Rifkin and scored on a triple by Martinez. The next batter, Mike Rouse, singled through the left side to score Martinez with the go-ahead run.

After retiring the first two batters in the top of the seventh, Cordero ran into trouble. A single by Casey Myers, a walk by Brooks Conrad and an error by Martinez loaded the bases for the Sun Devils. Arizona State Coach Pat Murphy sent Walsh to pinch-hit for Steve Garrabrants and Walsh drove a Cordero offering to left field to plate two runs and put the Sun Devils ahead for good.

The Sun Devils picked up an insurance run in the eighth inning and led, 5-3, heading into the bottom of the ninth. Aaron Klusman hit pinch-hitter Shane Costa to start the inning and had a 2-0 count on Rifkin when Kartler was summoned from the bullpen. Martinez’s sacrifice bunt moved the tying runs into scoring position, but Rouse and P.J. Pilittere struck out to end the game.

The Titans will host Arizona State for the second game of a three-game series at Goodwin Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
