Titans Beat ASU, 13-6, to Run Win Streak to Nine
Apr. 9, 2001 – Fullerton, Calif.

Junior catcher Brett Kay and sophomore shortstop Mike Rouse each went 4-for-5 with four RBI as the 14th-ranked Cal State Fullerton baseball team beat No. 15 Arizona State, 13-6, in a nonconference game at Goodwin Field Monday afternoon.

The Titans, who have won nine straight games and 15 of their last 17, improved to 23-10. The Sun Devils, who have lost eight of their last 11 games, dropped to 22-12-1. The game, which was a make-up for a previously rained-out date in late February, looked as if it too might be in jeopardy. The game started 13 minutes late because of showers during batting practice and also included a seven-minute delay in the third inning.

The weather couldn't cool the Titans' bats though. Coupled with their 28-run, 30-hit performance vs. Pacific on Sunday, the Titans have scored 41 runs and rapped out 45 hits in two days. Rouse is 9-for-11 with two homers, seven RBI and seven runs over the last two games. Kay, who was a homer shy of hitting for the cycle on Monday, set a career-high with four hits and tied a career-high with four RBI.

Fullerton jumped on the board for a pair of runs in the first and never trailed. David Bacani led off with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a bunt single by Robert Guzman. Jason Corapci's sacrifice fly scored Bacani with the first run and Kay's two-out single plated Guzman to make it 2-0.

Kay added an RBI-double in the Titans' four-run third inning. Rouse also drove in two with a single up the middle and Chris Stringellow's RBI-single gave the Titans a 6-0 lead.

Arizona State closed the gap quickly with a five-run fourth inning, with all five runs scoring after two outs were recorded. Jeff Phelp's two-run double was the big blow and pinch-hitter Steve Garrabrants also doubled in a run in the frame. Fullerton's Nick Lovato was charged with all five runs, four of which were earned.

Kay's two-run triple with two outs in the sixth pushed the Titans' lead to 9-6 and seemed to be the momentum-shifting blow. Arizona State would get a solo home run by Mike Lopez to lead off the eighth, but the Sun Devils did not get another runner in scoring position.

Each team sent six pitchers to the mound. Fullerton'sWes Littleton, who started and pitched a designated two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two, picked up the win to improve to 2-0. Chad Cordero retired all six batters he faced and struck out three to earn his fourth save, tying him with Kirk Saarloos for the team lead.

ASU's Jered Liebeck (1-1) allowed two runs on four hits in one inning of work and was tagged with the loss.

The Titans will resume Big West Conference play with a three-game series at Sacramento State, beginning Thursday.
