Seniors Lead Titans to 2-1 Win over No. 21 Baylor
Feb. 9, 2001 – Waco, Texas

Jon Smith allowed just one run in eight innings and Kirk Saarloos pitched a perfect ninth to lead 18th-ranked Cal State Fullerton to a 2-1 win over No. 21 Baylor in a nonconference baseball game in Waco, Texas on Friday night.

The Titans snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 2-4 on the season while Baylor fell to 3-2.

Smith (1-0), pitching in gusty winds and temperatures in the 30s, scattered seven hits and walked three while striking out six, all in the first four innings. Saarloos took over in the ninth and recorded his first save.

Baylor grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second when David Murphy’s liner to left field skipped by a diving Robert Guzman for a triple, allowing Mike Huggins to score from first base.

Fullerton took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Chris Stringfellow and David Bacani had back-to-back RBI singles. Bacani, who went 3-for-4, has seven hits in his last nine at bats.

In both the fifth and seventh innings, the Bears had runners on first and second with one out, but Smith escaped both jams.

The Titans will continue their series in Waco with a 1 p.m. (Central Standard Time) game on Saturday.
