Get Just Three Hits in 5-0 Shutout By Baylor Feb. 10, 2001 – Waco, Texas Steven White and Paul Thorp combined on a three-hit shutout as 21st-ranked Baylor defeated No. 18 Cal State Fullerton, 5-0, in a nonconference baseball game in Waco, Texas on Saturday afternoon. The Titans, who fell to 2-5, got two hits from Mike Rouse and another from Shawn Norris with two outs in the ninth as the Titans’ team batting average this season fell to .232. The Titans were also shut out for the second time this season after going the entire 2000 season without being held scoreless. Baylor, which improved to 4-2, got seven strong innings from White (2-0), who allowed just two hits and walked four while striking out five. Thorp allowed a hit and a walk in two innings. The Bears capitalized on three Fullerton errors to score four unearned runs. Norris, the Titan third baseman, made an errant throw to first base with two outs in the third that plated two runs for the Bears. In the fifth, right fielder Shane Costa dropped a fly ball that opened the door for three runs, two of them unearned. Mike Huggins had a two-run double and David Murphy doubled him in one out later. Titan pitcher Nick Lovato pitched well despite falling to 0-2. He scatted three hits and walked four in four innings of work. Freshman Darric Merrell threw the final four innings and allowed a pair of unearned runs on four hits and a walk. Merrell has yet to allow an earned run in 12.1 innings of work. Fullerton will play the final game of a three-game series at Baylor on Sunday at 1 p.m. CST. Box score
