Pitches 3-Hitter as Titans Shut out Baylor Feb. 11, 2001 Waco, Texas Cal State Fullerton senior Kirk Saarloos pitched a three-hit shutout as the 18th-ranked Titans beat No. 21 Baylor, 5-0, in Waco, Texas on Sunday to win the series, two games to one. Fullerton improved to 3-5 on the season while Baylor fell to 4-3. Saarloos (1-2) scattered three hits, walked one and struck out seven one shy of a career high - as the Bears sent just 28 batters to the plate. It was the righthanders first career complete game and shutout. The Titans grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second when Kyle Boyer tripled to right field and scored on a single to left by Mike Rouse. In the fourth, Boyer led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice by Rouse and scored on a bloop double down the right field line by Chris Stringfellow. Fullerton plated three runs in the eighth. Robert Guzman led off with a single and Brett Kay reached when pitcher Justin Taylor made an errant throw to first on a bunt. Preseason All-American Zane Carlson relieved Taylor, but gave up RBI singles to Cole Hilt and Shane Costa and a sacrifice fly to Rouse. The Titans, who notched their first shutout since a 3-0 win at Pacific on May 13, 2000, allowed just two earned runs in the three-game series and saw their team ERA drop to 2.93 on the season. Fullerton returns home for an 11-game homestand, which begins against Loyola Marymount on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Box score
