Slams Door on Biola Rally as Titans Win May 2, 2001 Fullerton, Calif. Cal State Fullerton freshman Chad Cordero pitched an inning and a third of scoreless baseball to shut down a late Biola rally and help the sixth-ranked Titans to a 7-6 win over the Eagles in a nonconference game at Goodwin Field Wednesday night. The Titans, who have won seven consecutive games and 21 of their last 22, improved to 35-11. Biola, which is ranked fourth in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) fell to 41-7. Fullerton had a 7-1 lead after seven innings, but the Eagles scorched Titan reliever Sean Martin for five runs in the eighth inning to cut the Titans lead to 7-6. Cordero picked up the final out of the inning and survived a small scare in the ninth to earn his ninth save. Leadoff hitter Ben Orr reached on an error by Titan shortstop Mike Rouse and after two quick outs, Eric Slater hit a deep fly ball to left field for the final out. The Titans took a 2-0 lead in the first off of Biola ace Chad Ekin (10-3). David Bacani walked to lead off and Shane Costa doubled before Jason Corapci and Aaron Rifkin had back-to-back sacrifice fly balls. A two-run homer by Matt Belfanti, his third, in the second inning made it 4-0. Shane Costa reached on a bunt single and later scored on a wild pitch in the third inning. Biolas Matt Cardamone tripled and scored on a throwing error by Bacani in the sixth for the Eagles first run, but the Titans answered in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Louie Lamoure and a run-scoring groundout by Shawn Norris. Biola drilled three extra-base hits in its five-run eighth inning. Orr led off with a triple down the right field line, Slater picked up a double and Jonathon Rouwenhorst had a two-run triple and scored on Bacanis second throwing error of the night. Nick Lovato (1-3), who was pre-designated to throw just three innings, flirted with danger in his 4.1 innings of work, but earned his first win. He allowed five hits and walked three, but Biola stranded eight runners in the first four innings. Shane Waroff allowed just one unearned run and struck out three in 2.2 innings before giving way to Martin to start the eighth. Box score
