Shuts Down Brigham Young, 2-1 Feb. 15, 2001 Fullerton, Calif. Jon Smith allowed just one run over eight innings and struck out nine one shy of a career high to lead the 19th-ranked Cal State Fullerton baseball team to a 2-1 nonconference win over Brigham Young at Goodwin Field Thursday night. The Titans, who have won three in a row and four of their last five, improved to 5-5 while the Cougars fell to 6-5. Smith (2-0) scattered eight hits and walked two to earn his second win in as many starts. He allowed just two baserunners over his final three innings of work, but picked both off at first base. Kirk Saarloos pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his second save of the season. BYU starter Ryan Adams (2-1) pitched a solid six innings, allowing two runs on nine hits and two walks, but he suffered his first loss of the season. The Titans generated all the offense they needed in the bottom of the second against Adams. Fullerton collected five consecutive singles including back-to-back bunt singles by Kyle Boyer and Shane Costa to open the frame. Louie Lamoures single to shortstop plated Mike Rouse with the Titans first run and Shawn Norris sharp single to right field scored Boyer with the go-ahead run. BYU scored in the top of the first when Shane Belliston singled, advanced to second on a balk by Smith and scored on a bloop single down the right field line by Matt Carson, when went 3-for-4 on the night. Every starter with the exception of Aaron Rifkin had a hit for Fullerton, which collected 10 hits, all singles, on the night. Norris had a team-high two hits. The three-game series at Goodwin Field continues Friday night, when Fullerton freshman Darric Merrell will start against BYUs Nate Fernley, who earned national Pitcher of the Week honors last week.
