Settles in After 1st as BYU Beats Titans, 8-2 Feb. 16, 2001 – Fullerton, Calif. Nate Fernley allowed two runs in the first, but shut down the Titans over the final eight innings as Brigham Young beat 19th-ranked Cal State Fullerton, 8-2, in a nonconference baseball game at Goodwin Field Friday night. Fernley, billed as the national Pitcher of the Week last week by Collegiate Baseball, finished with a seven-hitter, striking out six and walking just one while improving his record to 5-0. He did not allow a hit over the final four innings. Titan starter Darric Merrell (0-1) had not allowed an earned run in 12.1 innings coming into the contest, but gave up four runs (two earned) in six innings and suffered the loss. The Cougars, who improved to 7-5, scored a pair of runs in the first inning on a two-run homer by Matt Carson, his fifth of the season. Fullerton tied the score in the bottom of the first. David Bacani led off with a double and came around to score on Robert Guzman’s single. A two-out double by Mike Rouse scored Guzman with the second run. The Cougars took advantage of a passed ball and two errors by Mike Rouse – on the same play – in the sixth inning to take a decisive 4-2 lead. BYU also scored a pair of runs in the seventh and again in the eighth. Fullerton (5-6), which committed a season-high four errors, had its five-game winning streak vs. BYU (dating back to 1986) snapped. Robert Guzman and Brett Kay each had two hits for the Titans. Carson was 2-for-4 with two RBI to pace BYU. Fullerton and BYU will wrap up a three-game series at Goodwin Field on Saturday at 1 p.m. Box score
