Beat BYU on Near Perfect Game by Saarloos Feb. 17, 2001 Fullerton, Calif. Kirk Saarloos pitched a one-hit shutout and Kyle Boyer and Aaron Rifkin homered Saturday afternoon as 19th-ranked Cal State Fullerton blanked Brigham Young, 5-0, in a nonconference baseball game at Goodwin Field. Saarloos (2-2) retired the first 23 batters he faced before Kainoa Obrey blooped a single to right field with two outs in the eighth inning. He was the only baserunner for the Cougars, who fell to 7-6. The Titans improved to 6-6 by capturing the rubber game of the three-game series in 1:39, one of the shortest nine-inning games in Titan history. Saarloos struck out 11 in pitching his second consecutive shutout. He blanked Baylor, 5-0, on three hits last Sunday, also facing only 28 batters. In between, he pitched a perfect ninth inning on Thursday night to save a 2-1 win over the Cougars. He also had a perfect-inning save at Baylor on Feb. 9 which gives him 20 consecutive scoreless innings. Saarloos had retired 28 consecutive batters over three appearances before Obreys single and he has faced only 62 batters in recording the last 60 outs. Boyer, a freshman from Temecula, hit his first collegiate home run in the second inning off starter and loser Jeff Stone (0-1). Cole Hilt walked and Rifkin singled before Boyer went deep to left-center field. Chris Stringfellow scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning and Rifkin hit a solo home in the sixth to complete the scoring. Fullerton hosts Arizona State for a 3-game series beginning Friday night. Box score
