Sparks Titans to 7-3 Win over Cal Poly May 4, 2001 – San Luis Obispo, Calif. David Bacani hit a leadoff home run and scored four runs to lead Cal State Fullerton, ranked third by Collegiate Baseball, to a 7-3 win over Cal Poly in a Big West Conference baseball game in San Luis Obispo Friday night. The Titans, who have won eight consecutive games and 22 of their last 23, improved to 36-11 overall and 9-1 in conference play and maintained a one-game lead over UC Santa Barbara, which beat Long Beach State. The Mustangs fell to 28-18 overall and 6-4 in conference. Bacani hit the second pitch of the game over the left field wall to give the Titans the lead for good. Bacani also drew two walks in the game to break Phil Nevin's Titan career record of 140. Bacani is now the Titans' all-time leader in runs, walks and number of times hit by a pitch. Fullerton had its leadoff batter reach base seven times on the night and in each of the first four innings, the leadoff batter scored. Cal Poly scored once on a sac fly by Kyle Wilson in the third, but the Mustangs were shut down for the most part by Jon Smith. Smith improved to 9-1 on the season with 7.2 strong innings. He allowed three runs on eight hits, walked none and struck out four. Smith retired 11 consecutive batters over one stretch, but was lifted in the eighth after Kevin Tillman's two-run homer cut the Titans' lead to 6-3. Chad Cordero retired all four batters he faced to pick up his 10th save. He became just the fourth Titan – and first since Mark Kotsay in 1995 – to record double figures in saves and is now one shy of the single-season Big West Conference freshman record. Cal Poly's Brian Haskell, who allowed four runs on three hits and five walks in five innings, fell to 3-4. Fullerton will try to clinch its 11 consecutive series win on Saturday, when the Titans play at Baggett Stadium at 7 p.m. Box score
