Merrell
Gets More Than Enough Offense in 13-1 Win May 5, 2001 San Luis Obispo, Calif. Darric Merrell allowed just one run over eight innings and seven Titans racked up multiple hits in Cal State Fullerton's 13-1 win over Cal Poly in a Big West Conference baseball game in San Luis Obispo Saturday night. The Titans (37-11), who are ranked third in the nation by Collegiate Baseball, have won nine consecutive games and 23 of their last 24. They also clinched their 11th consecutive series win and will go for their sixth series sweep on Sunday. Fullerton remained one game ahead of UC Santa Barbara in the Big West Conference standings. Merrell, a freshman who has been invited to try out for the USA National Team this summer, retired the first eight batters he faced before allowing a single to Scott Anderson in the third. In eight innings, Merrell allowed seven hits and two walks and struck out nine. He also lowered his ERA to 1.85. Senior Mike Nunez pitched a perfect ninth and struck out two batters. In nine innings of work this season, Nunez has not allowed a run, has given up just one hit and has fanned 15 batters. The Titans broke open a 1-1 game with three runs in the fifth and six in the sixth. David Bacani singled to center to lead off the fifth and scored what proved to be the game-winning run on Robert Guzman's double to left-center field. Guzman was 3-for-3 on the night and reached base four times. Chris Stringfellow also had three singles, including two in the sixth inning. Shawn Norris and Aaron Rifkin each drove in three runs for the Titans. Fullerton will wrap up its three-game series at Cal Poly at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Box score
