Saarloos and Cordero Reach Milestones in 10-4 Win
May 6, 2001 – San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Kirk Saarloos notched his 12th consecutive win and Cal State Fullerton won its 10th in a row with a 10-4 Big West Conference victory over Cal Poly Sunday afternoon in San Luis Obispo.

The Titans, who have also won 24 of their last 25 games, improved to 38-11 overall and 11-1 in conference play. They swept their sixth series of the season and moved two games ahead of UC Santa Barbara, which visits Goodwin Field next weekend.

Saarloos (12-2) allowed three runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings while striking out six and walking three. The victory was the 30th of Saarloos' four-year career, making him the sixth Titan and first since James Popoff (1989-92) to reach that mark. Saarloos also broke the Big West Conference career record for appearances and moved into seventh place on the all-time NCAA list with his 122nd. Long Beach State's Gabe Gonzalez (1992-95) had held the Big West record previously.

Freshman reliever Chad Cordero also reached a milestone in the win. He pitched the final 2.2 innings and earned his 11th save, tying him with former Fresno State standout Bobby Jones for the most saves by a Big West Conference freshman.

The Titans got a three-run home run from Brett Kay in the first inning and never trailed. Robert Guzman drilled a two-run double in the second and Matt Belfanti and Shawn Norris had consecutive RBI-hits in the third to make it 7-0.

Cal Poly scored three runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-3, but Mike Rouse's three-run home run in the top of the ninth gave the Titans another seven-run cushion. The Mustangs scored once more in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Wilson. The run was the first charged to Chad Cordero since March 27, a span of 14 appearances and 20.2 innings.

For the second consecutive day, the Titans had seven players collect multiple hits. Mike Rouse went 2-for-2 with two walks to raise his team-leading averaged to .389.

Fullerton will travel to UCLA on Wednesday and host UC Santa Barbara next weekend. The Titans can clinch a share of the conference title by winning two of three and can clinch the title outright with a sweep.
