Now 10-2 as Titans Win 9th Straight Series Apr. 22, 2001 Northridge, Calif. Kirk Saarloos won his 10th consecutive game as10th-ranked Cal State Fullerton beat Cal State Northridge, 5-2, in a Big West Conference baseball game at Matador Field Sunday afternoon. The Titans, who won their ninth series in a row since dropping two of three to Stanford in the first series of the season, improved to 30-11 overall and 8-1 in conference play. Fullerton, which has won at least 30 games in all 27 NCAA Division I seasons, has won 16 of its last 17 games and 22 of its last 25. The Matadors fell to 25-18 and 3-6. Saarloos (10-2), who allowed two runs on six hits, came just one shy of notching his eighth complete game of the season. Northridge's Adam Nikolic came up with a two-out bad-hop RBI single in the ninth inning to bring the tying run to the plate. Chad Cordero was summoned from the bullpen and struck out Eric Verbryke to earn his sixth save. With his six strikeouts, Saarloos ran his career total to 312, passing Tim Thompson (309) for second place on the Titans' all-time list. Saarloos also made his 120th career appearance, tying him for eighth all-time in the NCAA and leaving him one shy of Long Beach State's Gabe Gonzalez for the Big West Conference mark of 121. Fullerton grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when David Bacani walked and Robert Guzman hit a two-run home run to left field off Northridge's Bill Murphy (7-4). Bacani's run was the 234th of his career, tying him with John Fishel (1982-85) for the all-time Titan record. Bacani had a chance to break the record, but was thrown out at home trying to score on a Jason Coracpi single in the sixth. The Matadors came up with a run on three hits in the third, but Fullerton increased its lead to 4-1 in the fifth on an RBI-double by Brett Kay and a run-scoring single by Mike Rouse. The Titans' fifth run scored on Guzman's RBI-single in the sixth. Fullerton will host UC Riverside in a nonconference series at Goodwin Field next weekend. Box score
