Pitches, Everbody Hits in 9-2 Win Mar. 11, 2001 – Houston, Texas Kirk Saarloos picked up his third complete game and struck out 10 as 25th-ranked Cal State Fullerton beat Houston, 9-2, in eight innings at Cougar Field Sunday afternoon. The Titans, who swept the three-game series, improved to 11-8, while Houston dropped its seventh consecutive game and fell to 6-16. The game, which included a 43-minute rain delay, was called after eight innings to allow for Cal State Fullerton's travel arrangements. Saarloos had his 28-inning scoreless streak snapped when Houston scored in the bottom of the first, but he still pitched a gem, allowing seven hits and walking just one. He notched double figures in strikeouts for the third time this season while passing Ted Silva for sixth on Fullerton's career list with 260. He also allowed just one fly ball out. The Titans, who never trailed in the series, scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Aaron Rifkin had a sacrifice fly and Mike Rouse and Shawn Norris had two-out RBI singles. Fullerton added another run in the second and two in the third to take a 6-1 lead. A sixth-inning RBI double by Mike Rouse, the only one of the game's 21 hits that went for extra bases, scored David Bacani to give Fullerton a 7-2 lead and the Titans scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the eighth to cap their scoring. Rouse finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs, while Rifkin, Bacani, Norris and Shane Costa picked up two hits each. Robert Guzman was the only Titan starter without a hit. Fullerton's starting pitchers threw 24.1 of the 26 innings in the series and allowed just six runs while walking only two batters. The Titans will host Hosei University of Japan in an exhibition game at Goodwin Field on Tuesday at 5 p.m. and will host Cal Poly for a nonconference series next weekend. Box score
