Beach State Beats Titans, 13-11, in Kia Finale Mar. 4, 2001 Fullerton, Calif. Bryan Kennedy went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four runs batted in as Long Beach State outslugged Cal State Fullerton, 13-11, Sunday night at the Kia Baseball Bash at Cal State Fullerton's Goodwin Field. The 49ers improved to 6-6 on the season and the Titans, who captured the tournament title despite the loss, fell to 8-8. Fullerton, which trailed, 8-1, at one point, rallied to within a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Aaron Rifkin hit a two-out three-run home run, his second homer of the game and third of the season. With the Titans behind, 12-11, Louie Lamoure then walked and stole second base, but Kyle Boyer struck out to end the frame. The 49ers added an insurance run on a passed ball by Titan reserve catcher Dan Mercadefe in the top of the ninth and Long Beach State closer Josh Alliston retired the Titans in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn his second save. Long Beach state cashed in on a shaky outing from Titan starter Nick Lovato (2.1 innings, four hits, four walks, eight runs) to grab an 8-1 lead in the top of the third inning. Four Titan relievers followed, but Long Beach State tacked on five more runs. Rifkin, who had the third two home-run game of his career, also tied a career high with five RBI. Jason Corapci, Mike Rouse and Shane Costa had two hits each for the Titans. Matt Paz, who allowed three earned runs in 5.0 innings, improved to 2-2 for the 49ers. Bob Cramer struck out a career-high six in 2.2 innings. Box score
