Picks Up First Win as Titans Top 49ers Mar. 23, 2001 – Long Beach, Calif. Wes Littleton picked up his first collegiate victory and Robert Guzman went 3-for-4 as 24th-ranked Cal State Fullerton beat Long Beach State, 5-3, in a nonconference baseball game at Blair Field in Long Beach Friday night. The Titans, who have won six of their last seven games, improved to 14-9, while the 49ers fell to 13-9. Fullerton picked up two runs in each of the second and third innings and a single run in the fourth to grab a 5-0 lead. Chris Stringfellow drove in the game's first run with a second-inning RBI single and P.J. Pilittere followed with a sacrifice bunt that scored Kyle Boyer. Jason Corapci and Aaron Rifkin had back-to-back RBI doubles in the third to make it 4-0. David Bacani's single through the left side of the infield in the fourth inning drove home Stringfellow with the fifth run. But after Fullerton starter Jon Smith, who allowed one unearned run in 3.1 innings, left the game in the fourth with a pulled groin, the 49ers rallied. Littleton (1-0) induced an inning-ending double play on his first pitch in the fourth inning, but Long Beach State scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut Fullerton's lead to 5-3. Long Beach State also had the tying runs in scoring position in the frame, but Littleton struck out pinch-hitter Mike Hofius to end the threat. Chad Cordero pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief of Littleton and Kirk Saarloos threw a scoreless ninth to earn his fourth save. Smith's injury is not thought to be serious, though he will be evaluated in the next few days. Rifkin, who went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, left the game in the sixth with a twisted ankle and is listed as day-to-day. Box score
