No Fooling...Titans Record Historic Sweep at Miami
Apr. 1, 2001 – Coral Gables, Fla.

Senior right-hander Kirk Saarloos picked up his seventh straight win and sixth complete game in as many starts as the 24th-ranked Cal State Fullerton baseball team completed a historic sweep of Miami with a 9-2 win in Coral Gables Sunday afternoon.

The Titans, who improved to 19-10 on the season, won their season-high fifth straight game, but more impressively, became the first team ever to sweep a three-game series from Miami at Mark Light Stadium. The Hurricanes (25-9) have been playing in the facility since 1973.

Fullerton, which has won 11 of its last 13 games, put together a 19-hit assault against Miami pitching Sunday. Seven Titans had multiple hits on the day, with Chris Stringfellow and Shawn Norris each picking up three. Shane Costa picked up a hit in his only at-bat in the ninth inning to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.

Fullerton dominated Miami's weekend pitchers. Brian Walker, Kiki Bengochea and Tom Farmer had been a combined 18-2 with a 2.55 ERA coming into the series, but the trio went 0-3 and posted a 12.91 ERA over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Saarloos (7-2), a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Year candidate, continued to dominate. He scattered seven hits and walked two while striking out eight. He allowed just two hits over the first six innings and, aside from Jim Burt's second-inning home run, Miami didn't get a hit out of the infield until the eighth inning.

The Titans opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when Matt Belfanti looped a double down the left field line to score Aaron Rifkin from second. P.J. Pilittere, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, singled in Stringfellow for a 2-0 edge and Shawn Norris' ground-ball RBI made it 3-0.

Miami's Burt hit a solo home run to left field off Saarloos in the bottom of the second to cut the Titans' lead to 3-1. But Pilittere's two-run single to left field in the fourth gave the Titans a 5-1 lead. Norris singled in the Titans's sixth run in the sixth inning and the Titans posted three more runs in the seventh. Mike Rouse's bunt single drove in Robert Guzman and Stringfellow laced a two-run double to left-center field to cap the Titans' scoring.

Cal State Fullerton will open Big West Conference play on Friday at 7 p.m. vs. Pacific at Goodwin Field.
