Saarloos
Fires No-Hitter as Titans Beat UOP, 28-0 Apr. 8, 2001 Fullerton, Calif. Senior right-handed pitcher Kirk Saarloos hurled the third no-hitter in Cal State Fullerton history Sunday afternoon and the Titan offense collected 30 hits en route to a 28-0 Big West Conference win over Pacific at Goodwin Field. Fullerton, which has won eight straight games and 14 of its last 16, improved to 22-10 overall and 3-0 in Big West Conference action. The Titans swept their conference-opening series for the fourth straight season. Pacific fell to 19-18 overall and 0-3 in conference play. Saarloos (8-2) walked just one and tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts while lowering his ERA from 1.40 to 1.26. He walked and hit a batter in the second inning, but retired the next 22 batters before Fullerton second baseman Jason Corapci mishandled a routine ground ball by Jason Walker with two outs in the ninth (the first error by Fullerton in the three-game series). Richard Hackett then hit a ground ball to shortstop Mike Rouse, who flipped to second base for the final out. The last no-hitter in school history came on April 23, 1995, when Ted Silva also no-hit Pacific. Longo Garcia threw a five-inning no-hitter vs. Long Beach State on April 3, 1987. Saarloos also flirted with a no-hitter earlier this season he had a perfect game bid broken up with two outs in the eighth inning against BYU on Feb. 17. The no-hitter marked Saarloos eighth consecutive win, his seventh complete game in as many starts and his fourth shutout, which ties him with Mike Parisi for the Titan single-season record. Ironically, Parisi was one of two former Cal State Fullerton players to throw out a ceremonial first pitch before Sundays game. Saarloos also extended his scoreless innings streak at Goodwin Field to 37 innings and became the third Titan pitcher in history to strike out 300 batters in his career. Overshadowed by Saarloos was an offensive assault that also found its way into Fullertons record book. The 28 runs marked the third most in program history and the most ever at Goodwin Field. It was also the most lopsided shutout in Titan history. Fullerton scored nine runs on nine hits in the first inning and by the end of five innings, the Titans led, 24-0. Ten different players had multiple hits with Mike Rouse and Shawn Norris posting career days. Rouse was 5-for-6 with two home runs, three RBI and five runs scored. Norris was 4-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and four runs scored. Shane Costa was 3-for-4 after entering as a pinch-hitter to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. The Titans first 13 hits were singles, but Fullerton collected seven extra base hits in all, including a season-high four home runs. Fullerton will host Arizona State in a make-up game on Monday at 3 p.m. Box score
