15 Titans Fall to No. 18 Pepperdine in Opener Jan. 30, 2001 Mailbu, Calif. Junior pitcher Dan Haren hit and pitched No. 18 Pepperdine to a 5-2 season-opening victory over No. 15 Cal State Fullerton Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium in Malibu. Haren pitched six impressive innings, allowing three hits, an earned run, walked one and struck out six to earn the victory. At the plate, Haren collected a pair of hits and drove in three runs. Senior right hander Jay Adams worked the final three innings and allowed three hits, one run and struck out three to record the save. Pepperdine scored a pair of unearned runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-1 lead and extended its advantage to 4-1 in the fifth inning on an opposite-field home run to left by senior first baseman Jared Pitney. Haren supplied the Waves with their final run with a base hit in the seventh inning that drove in junior second baseman Danny Garcia, who had doubled to lead off the inning. Garcia scored three runs, while Pitney, Haren and junior catcher Rock Mills, who made his Pepperdine debut after transferring from Alabama, each had two hits. Junior center fielder Woody Cliffords and freshman left fielder Chris Kelly also had hits for the Waves. Fullerton scored one run in the top of the second inning on a leadoff home run to center field by Brett Kay and added its other run in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI groundout by Shawn Norris. Preseason All-American Kirk Saarloos, who pitched five innings and allowed five hits, four runs (two earned) and struck out five, suffered the loss for Cal State Fullerton. Kay had two hits, while freshman right fielder Shane Costa went 3-for-3 in his collegiate debut. Fullerton will host Stanford for a three-game series this weekend, beginning Friday at 7 p.m. at Goodwin Field. Box score
