Remain Red Hot in 20-2 Win Over Sac State Apr. 12, 2001 – Sacramento, Calif. Darric Merrell allowed just one run on three hits in seven innings and the 14th-ranked Cal State Fullerton baseball team won its 10th straight game with a 20-2 Big West Conference win at Sacramento State Thursday afternoon. Fullerton, which has won 16 of its last 18 games, improved to 24-10 overall and 4-0 in Big West Conference play. The Hornets fell to 17-20 and 1-3. The win was also the 198th Division I win for Coach George Horton. The Titans have scored 61 runs in their last three games, the second-highest output in a three-game span in Fullerton's 27-year Division I history. The 1980 Titans scored 76 runs over three consecutive games. Over their 10-game winning streak, the Titans have batted .391 and averaged 11.2 runs per game. Merrell, a freshman pitcher out of Temecula, won his third straight game to improve to 4-2 on the season. He threw just 60 pitches in a seven-inning effort and lowered his ERA to 1.78 before Sean Martin pitched the final two innings. Sacramento State's Jeffrey Groegger, the first of five Hornet pitchers, allowed seven runs (five earned) on six hits in three innings and fell to 4-6. Sacramento State's pitchers walked 12 Titan batters on the day. Eight of the Titans' nine starters had at least one hit and six had multiple hits. Mike Rouse went 3-for-6 and has 12 hits in his last 17 at-bats. Shawn Norris was 2-for-5 and hit a three-run homer to center in the sixth inning. Jason Corapci was 0-for-4 before hitting a three-run double high off the center field wall in the seventh inning. Chris Stringfellow was 3-for-3 with two walks. Fullerton will meet Sac State at 2 p.m. on Friday for the second game of the three-game series. Box score
