Bacani's
Ninth-Inning Single Gives Titans 5-4 Win Feb. 2, 2001 Fullerton, Calif. David Bacanis two-out single in the bottom of the ninth scored Mike Rouse with the winning run as 15th-ranked Cal State Fullerton beat No. 14 Stanford, 5-4, in a nonconference baseball game at Goodwin Field Friday night. The Titans (1-1), who trailed, 4-2, heading into the frame, used a sacrifice fly by Shawn Norris and a two-out, two-strike RBI single by Robert Guzman to tie the game, 4-4. Stanfords Ryan McCally came in to relieve Cardinal closer John Hudgins, but promptly gave up Bacanis game-ending single. The Cardinal (2-3) and Titans traded unearned runs in the first inning before Stanford scored three runs in the fourth. Arik VanZandt singled in one run and Chris ORiordan added a two-run single to give Stanford a 4-1 lead. The Titans closed the gap to 4-2 in the seventh when one of Brett Kays game-high three hits drove in Bacani. Chad Cordero (1-0), who pitched the top of the ninth for Fullerton, earned the win. The Titans Darric Merrell shut out the Cardinal on three hits in 4.1 innings of middle relief after Titan starter Jon Smith was chased in the fourth inning. Hudgins (0-2) was charged with the loss. Cardinal starter Jeremy Guthrie, who allowed one unearned run on five hits in six innings, had been in line for the win before Fullertons ninth-inning rally. Bacani, Corapci, Rifkin and Guzman each had a pair of hits for Fullerton, while ORiordan, Jason VanMeetren and VanZandt each went 2-for-4 for Stanford. Fullerton, which had lost six consecutive games to Stanford, will meet the Cardinal at Goodwin Field on Saturday and Sunday in 1 p.m. contests. Box score
