Stanford Uses Back-to-Back Homers to Win, 3-0
Feb. 4, 2001 – Fullerton, Calif.

Jason VanMeetren and Jason Cooper hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning and Tim Cunningham and Mike Wodnicki pitched a combined shutout as 14th-ranked Stanford beat No. 15 Cal State Fullerton, 3-0, on Sunday in the rubber match of a three-game set at Goodwin Field.

The Titans (1-3), who managed just four hits, were shut out for the first time since they fell to Long Beach State, 4-0, on May 14, 1999.

Stanford (4-3) had just three hits off Fullerton starter Kirk Saarloos (0-2) through the first 5.2 innings, but VanMeetren connected for a long home run to left and Cooper followed with a shot over the center field wall. Stanford added an insurance run off Saarloos in the seventh when Carlos Quentin singled home Arik VanZandt. Nick Lovato entered with no outs in the eighth and allowed one hit in the final two innings.

Cunningham (2-0) sat down the first eight batters he saw and didn’t give up a hit until Brett Kay singled through the left side with two outs in the fifth. Mike Wodnicki took over for Cunningham with two outs in the seventh and allowed just one hit over the final 2.1 innings to earn his first save. The Cardinal pitchers allowed just one runner to reach second – Kyle Boyer walked in the seventh and moved up when Robert Guzman was hit by a pitch.

Fullerton, which is off to a 1-3 start for the third consecutive season, will visit No. 2 USC on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and will travel to Waco next weekend for a three-game series with No. 20 Baylor.
