Pound Tennessee, 10-6, at Kia Baseball Bash Mar. 2, 2001 Fullerton, Calif. Shawn Norris doubled twice and drove in three runs and Robert Guzman tied a career high with four hits as 24th-ranked Cal State Fullerton beat Tennessee, 10-6, in the Kia Baseball Bash at Cal State Fullertons Goodwin Field Friday night. The Titans, who improved to 7-7 on the season, scored in double figures for the first time this season and tied a season-high with 15 hits. Tennessee, which is 0-3 all-time vs. Cal State Fullerton, had its five-game winning streak snapped and fell to 10-2. The Titans scored eight runs in the first four innings off Tennessee starter and loser Ryan Gates (2-1). Fullerton, the designated visitor, opened the top of the first with three straight hits, including a two-run double by David Bacani. Fullerton scored four runs in the fourth (also a season-high). Norris had a two-run opposite field double, P.J. Pilittere drove in a run with a ground out and Guzman, who had three hits in the first three innings, singled in Norris to give Fullerton a 6-0 lead. Designated hitter Matt Belfanti tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth and Norris doubled in another run in the sixth to increase the lead to 8-0. Fullerton starting pitcher Jon Smith, who improved to 3-0 was brilliant early on. He had a no-hitter through four innings and faced the minimum number of batters through five innings. The Vols finally broke through for four runs, which were all charged to Smith, in the bottom of the sixth inning. Dennis Gomez and Jeff Christensen tripled in the inning, the latter of which drove Smith from the game. Tennessee added two runs in the eighth. Kris Bennett and and Chris Burke had consecutive singles to open the inning and Stevie Daniel extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a two run double down the left field line to greet Titan pitcher Chad Cordero. Kirk Saarloos pitched a scoreless ninth to extend his scoreless innings streak to 21. In earlier action Friday at the Kia Baseball Bash, Wichita State (5-2) scored five runs in the first inning and went on to beat Long Beach State (5-5), 10-8. Tennessee will meet Long Beach State on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., with the Titans meeting Wichita State at 7:00 p.m. Box score
