Saarloos
Masterful Again as Titans Stop Wichita St. Mar. 3, 2001 Fullerton, Calif. Jason Corapci drove in the tying and winning runs and Kirk Saarloos extended his scoreless innings streak to 28 as Cal State Fullerton beat Wichita State, 3-1, at the Kia Baseball Bash at Goodwin Field. The Titans improved their record to 8-7, marking the first time this season they have been over .500. With the win, the Titans improved to 2-0 in the Kia Baseball Bash and clinched the title. The Shockers fell to 5-3 on the season. Saarloos (3-2), who relieved Fullerton starter Darric Merrell with no outs in the third, retired the first 12 batters he faced, allowed just one hit in seven innings and struck out 11 of the 22 batters he faced to tie a career high. During his scoreless streak of 28 innings, Saarloos has allowed just five hits and walked two batters while facing just three batters over the minimum possible (84). Saarloos, making his 110th career appearance Saturday, tied the schools career record also held by Scott Wright (1981-84). Meanwhile, the Shockers Justin Mareau was nearly as impressive. He retired the first 13 batters he faced before allowing a bunt single by Kyle Boyer with one out in the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, P.J. Pilittere drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a single by Shane Costa and scored on a two-out hit by Corapci, which tied the score, 1-1. Pilittere also got things going for the Titans in the eighth, when he led off against Wichita State reliever Dustin Atkins (0-1) with an infield single. Costa was hit by a pitch and Robert Guzman laid down a perfect bunt down the third base line, which went for a hit and loaded the bases with no outs. Corapci came through again with a one-run go-ahead single through the right side and David Bacani hit a sacrifice fly to give the Titans an insurance run. The Shockers scored their lone run in the first inning, when McCarty led off with a walk and eventually scored on a single by Brian Burgamy. The Titans will wrap up play at the Kia Baseball Bash with a 5:30 p.m. vs. Big West Conference rival Long Beach State on Sunday. Wichita State and Tennessee will meet at noon.
