COLLEGE OF SAN MATEO (JC):
Played for Doug Williams for two seasons at the College of San Mateo in San Mateo, Calif. • Was named a 2000 California Community College All-American first baseman after finishing fifth in the state with a .470 batting average and first in the state with an .896 slugging percentage • Had 15 doubles, three triples, 12 home runs and 47 RBI • Also led the state with 47 walks (nearly one for every four plate appearances) • Earned All-Northern California honors as an outfielder his freshman season • Helped the Bulldogs to a 27-15-2 record his freshman year and a 30-11 mark his sophomore year.

JUNIPERO SERRA H.S.: A catcher and outfielder who collected a pair of varsity letters for Coach Pete Jensen, while helping his team to a combined 50-12 record during his two seasons • Helped Junipero Serra to back-to-back league titles and a CIF section championship his senior year • Had a monster senior season in 1998, when he batted .579 (44-for-76) with 11 home runs, nine doubles, 41 RBI and 39 runs in 30 games • Also slugged 1.173 on the season • Won the Catholic Athletic League triple crown for highest batting average (.543) and most home runs (5) and RBI (21) in league play • Earned league and CIF Central Coast Section Player of the Year recognition among other honors and was also a first-team all-state pick • Earned honorable-mention all-county honors his junior year after batting .398 (33-for-83) with six homers, eight doubles and 18 RBI • Set school records for single-season batting average (.579), career batting average (.484), runs in a game (4) and total bases in a season (92) • Surpassed records previously held by Junipero Serra alumni Jim Fregosi, Barry Bonds and Gregg Jefferies • Also played football and soccer • Was on the honor roll and was a two-year president of his school’s German Club.

PERSONAL: Born on March 26, 1980, in San Francisco, Calif. • Parents are Michael and Leigh Comfort • Is a single child • Majoring in communications • Has been drafted twice: in 1998 by Seattle in the 42nd round and in 1999 by Oakland in the 34th round • Also considered attending Texas, Cal, Arizona State and USC, but chose Cal State Fullerton so he “could develop as a player and win the College World Series” • Would like to see LSU added to the Titans’ schedule • Has spent time working with autistic children • Most prized possession is an autographed Katarina Witt picture • Says he’s better than anybody else at “playing to win” but... he’s never been able to sing • Would have liked to meet Vince Lombardi • Enjoys traveling, golfing, watching movies and eating at good restaurants • Is known for frequently quoting obscure movie lines.
