2000 USA NATIONAL TEAM:
Earned a spot on the USA National Team, which posted a 27-3-1 record on a two-month summer tour • As the team’s closer, Saarloos was brilliant, posting a 3-0 record with four saves and a 0.34 ERA • Struck out 35 batters and allowed just 10 hits and seven walks in 26.2 innings • Pitched five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out 12, en route to a 15-inning win over Mexico • Was named a first-team summer All-American by Baseball America.

TITANS ’00: Established himself as one of the top closers in college baseball • Named first-team All-Big West Conference after pacing the conference in ERA (2.32), appearances (33) and games finished (29) • Was second in opponents’ batting average (.199) and saves (8) • Moved into third place on Cal State Fullerton’s career saves list with 18 • His 2.32 ERA tied him for seventh on the school’s single-season list • Named co-conference Pitcher of the Week on March 20 after picking up wins over national power Arizona State (5.1 innings, three hits, one run) and Pacific (2.2 perfect innings with four strikeouts) • Picked up all eight of his saves from March 25 on • Averaged 10.9 strikeouts per inning, but more impressively, had a strikeout to walk ratio of 5.7 to 1 (80 to 14) • Went 25.0 consecutive innings without issuing a walk during one stretch (March 14 through April 21) • Surrendered just three home runs and none over his final 28.2 innings • Retired the first 15 batters he faced in the NCAA Regionals • Pitched three perfect innings against Virginia Tech and another one against Loyola Marymount before allowing a run on two hits against USC • Continued to fare extremely well when entering in the middle of an inning (first batters were 3-for-20 with 11 strikeouts) • Had a groundout to flyout ratio of slightly more than 2 to 1 (75 to 37) • Was victimized by Nevada in the final game of a three-game series at Goodwin Field, when the Wolf Pack rallied for four two-out runs in the ninth inning to beat the Titans, 7-5.

TITANS ’99: Developed into one of the Titans’ best-ever relief pitchers • His 39 appearances were second only to Scott Wright’s NCAA record 47 games in 1984 • Honorable mention All-Big West Conference pick • Finished the game on the mound in 36 of his appearances • In Omaha, he worked all three games (7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO) with one save • When summoned in mid-inning (25 occasions), he held first batter faced to an .048 batting average (1-for-21) with only a single, three walks and a hit batter marring a record embellished by six double plays and eight strikeouts • At Notre Dame Regional, got a win and a save (5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 8 SO) • Won back-to-back games at Long Beach State on Apr. 10 & 12 (rainout in between), working 5.2 innings and allowing only one run • Eight times worked three or more innings including high of 4.2 in strong, but losing early effort at Pepperdine (4.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R) and 4.1 IP (1 H, 0 R) vs. Florida State in College World Series • Walked only 20 batters in 74.1 innings while fanning 68.

TITANS ’98: Developed into solid setup man in second half of season • Posted 4-2 record with three saves and 5.15 ERA • After getting hit hard as a starter vs. Long Beach State on Mar. 21, allowed only three earned runs in next 21.2 innings over 13 appearances • Won as a emergency starter on Mar. 14 at Cal Poly SLO (5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER) in longest outing of the year • Struggled in two appearances vs. LSU in NCAA Regional.

VALLEY CHRISTIAN H.S.: Four-year varsity letterman as a pitcher and shortstop for Cerritos-based school and Coach Mike DeMaster • Selected All-CIF and All-Olympic League all four seasons • Was team most valuable player as a junior and senior • As a senior, hit .456 with 10 home runs and 42 RBI • On the mound, was 10-2 with a 0.92 earned run average and 136 strikeouts • As a junior, was 9-3 with a 1.30 ERA and batted .402 with seven homers and 23 RBI • As a sophomore, hit .360 with three homers and 19 RBI and a pitching record of 3-0 with six saves and a 0.83 ERA • As a freshman, was 11-1 with a 1.60 ERA while batting .290 • Also played three years of varsity football and three years of varsity soccer.

PERSONAL: Born on May 23, 1979, in Long Beach, Calif. • Parents are Larry and Linda Saarloos • Has an older brother, Keith • Majoring in communications with the hopes of owning a small business • Most memorable sports thrill was pitching in the 1999 College World Series • Likes to golf • Favorite major leaguer is Greg Maddux and favorite team is the Dodgers • Would have liked to meet Jesus • Favorite food is the Baja Burrito.
