Titans Sweep Big West Weekly Honors Apr. 22, 2002 Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton sophomore Shane Costa has
been named Big West Conference Player of the Week and sophomore Chad Cordero
has been named Pitcher of the Week, marking the second time this season
the Titans have captured both honors in the same week.
Costa, an outfielder from Visalia, earned the award for the third time
this season after batting a team-high .500 (9-for-18) to extend his hitting
streak to 21 games and help the Titans to a 4-0 week. For the second time
this season, Costa hit for the cycle on the week, belting a pair of doubles,
a triple and a homer. He drove in a team-high six runs and scored four
times. Costa had only a bunt single in an 8-6 win over Pepperdine on Tuesday,
but went 8-for-14 in a sweep at UC Santa Barbara. His best effort came
in the series finale, when he hit a three-run homer to give the Titans
the lead for good in their 9-2 win and later singled and doubled en route
to a career-high four RBI.
Cordero, a righthander out of Chino, won the honor for the second time
this year. He picked up a pair of wins last week as the Titans twice came
from behind to win. He posted a 1.69 ERA in his two outings and struck
out 10 in just 5.1 innings. Cordero allowed a run in two innings against
Pepperdine on Tuesday, but notched all six outs by way of the strikeout
and earned the victory when Fullerton rallied for four runs in the eighth.
Cordero also came on in the UCSB opener with the Titans trailing, but
he pitched 3.1 scoreless innings to give the Titans time to rally for
a 6-2 win in 11 innings.
Fullerton, ranked 11th in this week's Baseball America poll, visits
UCLA on Tuesday, hosts Vanguard on Wednesday and then plays host to Cal
State Northridge for a Big West showdown this weekend.
