Cordero Billed Big West Pitcher of the Week Feb. 26, 2002 Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton right-handed closer Chad Cordero has been named the
Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week for the period ending Feb. 24,
the conference office announced today.
Cordero, a sophomore first-team preseason All-American out of Chino, Calif.,
was 1-0 with a pair of saves and a 1.29 ERA last week as the Titans went
3-1 and captured a series at (then) No. 16 Arizona State.
The hurler struck out 10 and walked just two in 7.0 innings while opponents
batted .125 against him. At Loyola Marymount on Tuesday, Cordero struck
out a career-high six over the final 2.2 innings and gave the Titans time
to rally for a 7-6 win in the ninth.
He also saved both Titan victories at Arizona State, combining to allow
just one run on a pair of hits in 4.1 innings. In the 7-5 series finale
win, Cordero retired the Sun Devils' No. 3, 4 and 5 batters in the ninth
with the tying runs on base.
It is the second such award for Cordero, who was named the co-Pitcher
of the Week by the conference in April of last year.
