Cordero Named Semifinalist for Howser Trophy
May 9, 2002 – Fullerton, Calif.

Cal State Fullerton sophomore righthander Chad Cordero has been named of one 40 semifinalists for the Dick Hoswer Trophy, presented annually to the top collegiate baseball player in the nation.

The award is presented by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association,
working in Association with the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce. The membership of the NCBWA will choose the winner based on three rounds of voting. The 2002 winner will be announced at the College World Series in Omaha on Friday, June 14 at 9:30 a.m. CDT.

Cordero, who is 4-2 with a 2.76 ERA and ranks among the top 10 in the country with 11 saves, has struck out 63 and walked 16 in 45.2 innings. His strikeouts-per- nine-innings average of 12.4 would rank fifth nationally if he had enough innings to qualify (he is just 2.1 innings shy). Cordero's former Fullerton teammate, All-American pitcher Kirk Saarloos, was a semifinalist and finalist for the Dick Howser Trophy in 2001. No Titan has ever won the honor, which was created in 1987.

The Dick Howser Trophy is given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987. Criteria for consideration for the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage.

The winner's name is inscribed on the permanent trophy, a bronze bust of
Howser permanently displayed at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. Both
the winner and his school receive a special trophy to keep.
