Kyle Boyer went 3-for-4 with a career-high four RBI and Jordan DeJong
pitched five scoreless innings as No. 16 Cal State Fullerton completed
a convincing sweep over UNLV with a 13-1 win at Goodwin Field Sunday afternoon.
The Titans (6-3), who have won six of their last seven games, outscored
UNLV, 41-4, in the three-game series. UNLV (4-5) has lost 10 consecutive
games to the Titans.
For the first time in the series, the Titans didn't score in the first
inning, though they scored single runs in the second and third innings
and piled on eight combined runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Shane Costa went 3-for-3 with three runs and reached base all five times
and junior college transfer Justin Smyres had a career-high three hits.
Sophomore Richie Burgos had one hit, but it proved to be the backbreaker
for the Rebels. WIth two outs in the fourth, Burgos doubled to right center
to clear the bases and give the Titans a 7-0 edge.
DeJong (2-0), making his first start after three solid relief appearances,
turned in the third consecutive strong start by the Titans. He scattered
just three hits in five innings, struck out four and walked one. Jeff
Housman allowed the Rebels' sole run a solo shot by Jason Reuss
in the sixth in a pair of innings and Chad Cordero worked the final
two innings.
UNLV starter Courtney Hall (0-1), the first of five Rebel pitchers, took
the loss.
UNLV Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle was ejected by first base umpire Dan
Perugini in the bottom of the second inning.
Fullerton will travel to Mesa, Ariz. next weekend for a three-game series
against Arizona State at Hohokam Park.
