Wichita State right-hander Adam Peterson threw seven strong innings and
the Shocker offense broke out for 17 hits as the No. 9 Shockers handed
No. 13 Cal State Fullerton a 13-4 setback at Eck Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Titans (11-8) lost just their second series of the season, while Wichita
State improved to 8-1.
Fullerton starter Jordan DeJong (4-1), who suffered his first loss, was
roughed up in the first inning. The Shockers hit for the cycle in the
inning with first baseman Logan Sorensen's two-run blast giving Wichita
State a 5-0 lead.
John Hanley and Chris Klosterman had back-to-back doubles in the top of
the second as the Titans countered with a pair of runs, but Peterson (1-0)
was nearly untouchable the rest of the way. He retired 10 consecutive
batters over one stretch and did not allow more than one baserunner until
the seventh inning.
DeJong was lifted after just two innings. Of the four pitchers to follow
him to the mound, Chad Cordero was the most effective, limiting the Shockers
to one run on three hits in three innings.
Fullerton got to reliever Reuben Kerbs for a pair of runs in the ninth,
but it was too little too late for the Titans.
Hanley, Klosterman and David Munoz each had two hits for the Titans. The
top four hitters in the Shocker lineup combined to go 9-for-17 with seven
RBI and six runs scored.
Fullerton will host Loyola Marymount on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and will travel
to Nevada next weekend.
