varsity letterman at Norte Vista H.S. in Riverside, Calif., where he played
for Scott Albertson • Holds an assortment of records at the school,
including career home runs (30), RBI (105), runs scored (92) and hits (98)
• Was a two-way star as a senior, when he batted .311 with a school-record
14 homers and 43 RBI and posted a 10-2 record, 1.63 ERA and 104 strikeouts
on the mound • Earned a variety of honors for his efforts: Sunkist
League MVP, Riverside County Player of the Year, All-CIF and all-state •
His best game came against Martin Luther King, when he blasted three homers,
including a grand slam, and drove in eight runs • Also the league MVP
and an all-county, All-CIF and all-state pick as a junior with a .420 average,
12 homers and 38 RBI and a 12-4 record and 3.50 ERA • Helped Norte
Vista to Sunkist League championships and CIF semifinal appearances both
his junior and senior seasons • Batted .329 with four homers in his
first season at the varsity level as a sophomore, good enough for all-league
recognition • Also an excellent basketball player, Hanley was a three-time
all-league selection and earned all-county accolades as a senior, when he
led the county in three-point field goals • As a junior, Hanley played
against the nation’s top-ranked basketball (Compton Dominguez) and
baseball (West Torrance) teams in the CIF playoffs.
