CUESTA COLLEGE: Was a two-time California Community College Baseball Coaches Association All-American for Coach Larry Lee at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Helped Cuesta reach the state tournament as a sophomore, when the Cougars went 36-12 overall Batted .376 with two homers, 15 doubles, 24 RBI and 31 stolen bases His regular season average of .384 was the fifth best in the 12-team Western State Conference while he finished first in runs scored (52), second in hits (71) and third in triples (5) As a freshman, Smyres finished the regular season batting .422 with a homer, 14 doubles, 35 RBI and 15 stolen bases as Cuesta went 34-13 Was tied for ninth in the state with 73 hits.
