Cal State Fullerton pitchers Ryan Schreppel, Dustin Miller, Sean Martin
and Chad Cordero combined for a one-hitter as the 2003 Titans beat a group
of Fullerton baseball alumni, 8-0, at Goodwin Field Saturday afternoon.
Schreppel, a freshman out of Stockton, retired the first eight batters
he faced before allowing a single to left field by former Titan Geoff
Comfort (2001-02). He faced the minimum number of batters in his four
innings of work before giving way to Miller, a redshirt freshman, who
faced just one batter over the minimum in his three innings.
The current Titans got to alumni starter Kirk Saarloos (1998-2001), the
only current Major Leaguer at the event, for three runs in the first.
Saarloos, who broke in with Houston last season, gave up singles to the
first four batters, though two were infield hits and one was a bloop to
shallow center field.
Fullerton tagged on two more in the second off Jordan DeJong (1998-99,
2002) to take a 5-0 lead. A sacrifice fly by Kurt Suzuki in the fifth
put the Titans on top, 6-0, and Sergio Pedroza doubled in a pair in the
seventh to cap the scoring.
Justin Smyres, Trevor Mortensen and and Justin Turner each had two hits
for Fullerton, which used 21 position players.
The Titans, ranked 13th by Baseball America, will open the 2003
season against No. 3 Stanford on Friday at 7 p.m. at Goodwin Field.
