Horton Among Titans Honored at Midseason Point Apr. 11, 2003 Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton Coach George Horton has been honored as the national
Coach of the Year through the midseason point by Baseball America
and a trio of Titan freshmen were also recognized by the publication.
Horton was cited by the publication for keeping the Titans among the nation's
elite despite a rash of pitching injuries and a month-long suspension
of staff ace Wes Littleton. The Titans are currently ranked second in
the nation by Baseball America. Horton's .700 career winning percentage
is sixth among the nation's active Division I coaches and he is just 13
victories shy of 300 in his career.
Second baseman Justin Turner, outfielder Danny Dorn and starting pitcher
Dustin Miller were named the best freshmen in the nation at their respective
positions. Turner is riding an 11-game hitting streak, which has raised
his average to .333, and he has yet to commit a fielding error at second
base in 32 starts. Dorn is one of just two players in the Big West Conference
among the top six in batting, slugging and on-base percentage. Miller
has already earned three Big West Pitcher of the Week citations.
Fullerton (28-7 overall, 3-0 in conference play) will travel to Cal State
Northridge for a three-game Big West series beginning today.
