Titans Wrap up Sweep with 4-3 Win at Cal Poly Apr. 27, 2003 San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Box Score
Richie Burgos tripled in Shane Costa with the
go-ahead run in the eighth to lead No. 1 Cal State Fullerton to a 4-3
win over Cal Poly in the finale of a Big West Conference series at Cal
Poly Sunday afternoon.
The Titans won their 10th straight game and improved to 38-8 overall and
11-1 in conference play. Fullerton, which has swept seven series this
season, surpassed its 2002 win total with the victory on Sunday. Cal Poly
fell to 22-21-1 overall and 4-8 in Big West play.
After outscoring the Mustangs, 37-10, in the first two games of the series,
Fullerton needed a valiant bullpen effort and timely hitting to cap the
three-game sweep. Jason Windsor (7-1) and Chad Cordero (fifth saves) combined
to throw 4.2 no-hit shutout innings in relief of starter RIcky Romero.
The Titans grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on Kyle Boyer's RBI-single
to center field off Mustang starter Garrett Olson (5-2). But the Mustangs
chased Romero with three runs in the fourth. Pat Breen hit a monstrous
two-run homer to center field and Kyle Wilson lifted a sac fly to cash
in Alex Chavarria, who had tripled.
But the Titans got a sac fly from Shane Costa and another RBI-single from
Boyer in the fifh to even the game at 3-3. In the eighth, Costa led off
with a single to right field and moved to second on a sac bunt by Boyer
before Burgos' triple to center field sent Olson to the showers.
Cordero, who retired all six batters he faced, extended his consecutive
scoreless innings streak to 17.2 over his last 13 appearances and has
not allowed a run since March 16. On the season, Cordero has fanned 45
batters and walked just five in 36.0 innings.
The Titans will travel to UC Riverside for a three-game Big West series
next weekend.
