The 'Chief' to Wear Montreal Uniform Saturday Aug. 29, 2003
Former Cal State Fullerton All-American closer Chad Cordero has been called
up to the Major Leagues by the Montreal Expos and will wear an Expos uniform
for the first time on Saturday in Florida.
Cordero was 1-1 with six saves and a 2.05 ERA in 19 games for the class-A
Brevard County Manatees. He was selected 20th overall by Montreal in the
2003 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Cordero (2001-03) was a three-year closer for the Titans, compiling a
school record 34 saves and a 2.09 ERA, which ranks second all-time at
Fullerton. He closed out the Titans' home regional and super regional
championship victories in both 2001 and 2003 to help Fullerton to a pair
of CWS appearances in his three seasons.
Cordero will look to become the 39th former Titan to appear in a Major
League game. Reed Johnson (Toronto) and Erasmo Ramirez (Texas) also made
their Major League debuts this season. This also marks the third time
in four years that the Titans have had a former player reach the Major
Leagues within months of completing his collegiate season. Adam Johnson
debuted for Minnesota in the summer of 2000 and Kirk Saarloos was called
up by Houston in 2001 shortly after pitching for the Titans in the College
World Series.
