Freshman outfielder Danny Dorn was 5-for-5 with four extra-base hits and
four RBI to pace No. 13 Cal State Fullerton to a 10-1 win over Fresno
State in a nonconference game in front of 3,421 at Pete Beiden Field Saturday
afternoon.
The Titans improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1977, when Fullerton
got out to a record 6-0 start. Fresno State fell to 1-2. Fullerton, which
has never trailed this season, came two outs away from recording back-to-back
shutouts for the first time since 1996.
Dorn hit a three-run homer in the first inning, doubled in the third,
singled in the fifth and added doubles in the seventh and eighth innings.
He is batting .600 (9-for-15) and slugging 1.333 this season.
Freshman left-hander Ryan Schreppel improved to 2-0 after holding the
Bulldogs scoreless on just two hits in five innings of work. Jason Windsor
allowed two hits in three innings and Sean Martin pitched the final inning.
For the the second consecutive game, Justin Smyres got the Titans on the
board with a leadoff home run off Matt Garza (1-1). Walks to Ronnie Prettyman
and Richie Burgos set up an RBI-single by Kyle Boyer before Dorn hit the
Titans' second homer of the inning -- a three-run blast to left-center
-- to give Fullerton a 5-0 lead.
Another pair of walks hurt the Bulldogs in the second. With one out, Smyres
and Prettyman both drew bases on balls. Shane Costa' infield single plated
Smyres and Burgos lifted a sac fly to center to score Prettyman with the
Titans' seventh run.
Fullerton went on to add single runs in the third (on an RBI-single to
center by Sergio Pedroza), in the seventh (on a single by Justin Turner
through a drawn-in Bulldog infield) and in the eighth (on Dorn's third
double of the day).
The Bulldogs scored their first run of the series with one out in the
ninth when pinch-hitter Brandon Esparza's grounder up the middle dribbled
by Smyres into center field to plate Kyle Atrat.
Costa was 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to nine games (dating back
to last season) and Prettyman reached base four times (two walks and two
HBP).
The Titans will go for their second consecutive series sweep on Sunday
at 1:05 p.m.
