Chris Denove went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBI and Mike Kunes pitched
seven strong innings to lead UCLA to a 13-2 upset of No. 6 Texas in the
Kia Baseball Bash opener in Fullerton Friday afternoon.
The Bruins improved to 9-9 with the win while Texas dropped to 12-4.
UCLA's Wes Whisler opened the fourth with a homer to right field off Texas
starter Justin Simmons (2-2) and the floodgates opened. UCLA scored nine
runs on nine hits in the frame to chase Simmons, a first-team All-American
last year.
Kunes (3-1) allowed just two runs on six hits in seven innings while striking
out five.
Seven Bruins had multiple hits, with Ryan McCarthy collecting a game-high
four. Whisler and Brandon Averill each had three for UCLA. Texas -- which
scored its only runs on a two-run shot by Joe Ferin in the fifth -- got
two hits a piece from J.D. Reininger, Nic Crosta and Ferin.
UCLA will meet Tulane on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. while Texas will take on
host Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m.
