Dustin Miller and John Tucker combined on a four-hitter as fourth-ranked
Cal State Fullerton blanked No. 5 Long Beach State, 7-0, in a nonconference
game Saturday afternoon to mark the Titans' first-ever shutout at Blair
Field.
Fullerton, which scored all seven of its runs with two outs, improved
to 23-6 overall and snapped a five-game losing streak to the 49ers, who
fell to 18-8 with the loss.
Miller scattered just three singles, walked three and struck out three
in seven-plus innings to improve to 5-1. Miller retired the 49ers in order
four times and allowed just two runners to move into scoring position.
Tucker came on to retire six of the seven batters he faced. Long Beach
starter Cesar Ramos took the loss to fall to 1-4.
Fullerton grabbed a 1-0 lead when Kyle Boyer smacked a two-out triple
off the right-center field wall and scored on Shane Costa's infield single.
The Titans broke things open in the fifth, when Long Beach shortstop Troy
Tulowitzki's two-out fielding error opened the door for four Titan runs.
Danny Dorn and Kurt Suzuki each had RBI-hits for Fullerton.
In the seventh, the Titans again came through with two outs. After the
first two batters of the innings were retired on two pitches, Fischer
drew a walk, Dorn was hit by a pitch for the second time and Suzuki drilled
a 2-2 pitch from releiver Matt Paz up the middle to give the Titans a
7-0 lead.
Boyer singled, doubled and tripled on the day to extend his career-high
hitting streak to 10 games and Suzuki was 2-for-5 with three RBI.
Fullerton and Long Beach will square off in the rubber game of the series
on Sunday at 1 p.m.
