Titans Can't Get to Weaver as 49ers Win Title May 17, 2003 Fullerton, Calif.
Box Score
Jered Weaver pitched a four-hit complete game as third-ranked Long Beach
beat No. 4 Cal State Fullerton, 4-1, at Goodwin Field Saturday night to
clinch its first regular season Big West Conference title since 1997.
The Titans fell to 42-13 overall and 14-6 in Big West play while the 49ers
improved to 37-15 overall and 16-4 in conference play. A record-tying
sellout crowd of 3,501 was on hand for the Titans' second loss in 27 games
at Goodwin Field this season.
Weaver, who threw 120 pitches on the night, improved to 12-3. He struck
out nine and walked just one. His only blemish came in the form of Kyle
Boyer's fifth home run -- a solo shot that just cleared the right field
wall in the bottom of the fourth to cut the 49ers lead at the time to
2-1.
Long Beach never trailed after Jon Bowker connected off Titan starter
Ryan Schreppel (5-2) in the first for a solo homer to straight-away center
field. Chuck Sindlinger's bunt single in the second scored another run.
Long Beach took a more comfortable lead in the fifth, when Bowker drove
in a run with a ground ball out and Troy Tulowitzki followed with an RBI-single
off Titan reliever Wes Littleton.
Long Beach State's Todd Jennings went 3-for-5 to extend his hitting streak
to 22 games. Sergio Pedroza had a pair of hits for the Titans.
The Titans, who are 8-2 against ranked teams this season, will wrap up
the regular season on Sunday at 5 p.m.
