Former Titan Reed Johnson Called up by Blue Jays Apr. 13, 2003
Former Cal State Fullerton standout Reed Johnson was called up today from
Triple-A Syracuse by the Toronto Blue Jays and is poised to become the
37th former Titan to play in the Major Leagues.
Johnson was batting .333 with a homer and four RBI in four games for Syracuse
when he learned he had been promoted. He suited up for Toronto today,
though he didn't appear in the Blue Jays' 9-3 loss to Minnesota. Toronto
plays a four-game series at Yankee Stadium beginning Monday night.
Johnson played for the Titans from 1997-99 and hit .345 with 21 homers
and 120 RBI in his three-year career. He earned first-team All-Big West
honors in 1999, when he batted .396 with 22 doubles, 13 homers, 59 RBI,
13 sac hits and 18 stolen bases to help the Titans reach the College World
Series.
Johnson was selected by Toronto in the 17th round of the draft following
the 1999 season. The last former Titan to make his Major League debut
was Kirk Saarloos, who was called up by Houston in June, 2002.
