Titans Earn National No. 7 Seed for NCAA Tourney May 26, 2003 Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton has earned the National No. 7 seed for the NCAA Division
I Baseball Championship and will host the University of Arizona, the University
of Notre Dame and the University of San Diego in a regional at Fullerton's
Goodwin Field this weekend.
The Titans (43-13), top-seeded in their regional, will open with No. 4
San Diego (31-28) on Friday at 7 p.m. No. 2 Arizona (35-21) will meet
No. 3 Notre Dame (43-16) in the first game at 3 p.m. The double-elimination
regional will continue with three games on Saturday and one or two games
on Sunday.
The winner will face the winner of the Arizona State regional (ASU, UNLV,
New Mexico State and Central Connecticut State) in a best-of-three super
regional (June 6-9) with a berth in the College World Series (June 13-23)
on the line.
The other national seeds are No. 1 Florida State, No. 2 LSU, No. 3 Georgia
Tech, No. 4 Auburn, No. 5 Rice, No. 6 Stanford and No. 8 Miami. Since
the NCAA expanded the tournament field to 64 teams in 1999, the Titans
have earned a national seed three times (No. 3 in 1999 and No. 1 in 2001).
Fullerton has made 12 consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament,
the fifth-longest active streak behind Miami, Florida State, Clemson and
LSU. The Titans own a 61-31 all-time record in regional play and a 90-50
record in NCAA Tournament play. The Titans have made 11 trips to the College
World Series, most recently in 2001.
Fullerton is playing host to a regional for the third time in four years.
The Titans finished in second to top-seeded USC in 2000, but topped a
field of Arizona State, Texas Tech and Temple in 2001.
Fullerton is 44-4-2 all-time against San Diego and beat the Toreros twice
this season (16-6, on March 11 at Goodwin Field and 6-1, on March 25 in
San Diego). The Titans are 49-25 all-time against Arizona and have won
13 in a row, though the teams haven't met since 1997. The Titans are 2-0
all-time against Notre Dame and most recently played the Fighting Irish
in the 1999 regional at Notre Dame.
Ticket information for the regional is available by calling the Cal State
Fullerton box office at (714) 278-CSUF. A regional web site will be launched
at TitanSports.org later today.
