Romero Named Co-Big West Pitcher of the Week Apr. 8, 2003 Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton freshman pitcher Ricky Romero (East Los Angeles, Calif.)
has been named the Co-Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week, the Irvine-based
conference office announced.
Romero struck out a career-high 14 batters the most by a Titan
pitcher in three years and hurled a three-hit shutout as second-ranked
Cal State Fullerton blanked Pacific, 7-0, in a Big West Conference game
at Goodwin Field Saturday night.
Romero, a lefty out of East Los Angeles, improved to 3-0 while lowering
his ERA to 2.81. After allowing a single to open the fourth, Romero retired
18 of the final 19 batters, 11 of them by strikeout. Five different Tigers
struck out at least twice. The 14 Ks were the most since Adam Johnson
fanned 17 Pacific batters during the 2000 season.
Titan pitchers have earned at least a share of the conference Pitcher
of the Week honor in seven of the first 10 weeks. Fullerton has already
had five different pitchers earn the award. Since the Big West began tracking
its weekly awards in 1990, no team has had more than three pitchers earn
the Pitcher of the Week honor in one season.
