Horton Picks Up 300th Win as Titans Win Series May 11, 2003 Fullerton, Calif.
Box Score
Ryan Schreppel pitched four shutout innings
in his first start in more than two months as fourth-ranked Cal State
Fullerton beat UC Irvine, 9-1, Sunday in a Big West Conference game at
Goodwin Field to mark Titan Coach George Horton's 300th Division I career
victory.
The Titans improved to 41-12 overall and 13-5 in Big West play. But since
Long Beach State swept UC Riverside at Blair Field this weekend, the Titans
must sweep Long Beach at Goodwin Field next weekend to win the conference
title. Otherwise, Long Beach will claim the conference crown.
Schreppel, who earned the win since it was predetermined that he would
pitch only four innings, improved to 5-1. It was his first start since
undergoing knee surgery on March 14. He scattered just a pair of hits.
The Titans grabbed an early 2-0 lead off Anteater starter Paul French
(2-6) on back-to-back first inning singles by Shane Costa and Kyle Boyer.
Fullerton added five more singles, a sac fly and a walk to score five
runs in the third and put the game out of reach.
Irvine's only run came in the fifth when Darric Merrell walked the first
batter he faced and then gave up three consecutive singles. But a nicely
executed double play by Titan third baseman Ronnie Prettyman – which
saw him step on the bag and throw home for the second out – kept
things from getting out of hand.
The Titans rounded out their scoring in the eighth, when Jason Corapci
banged a two-run single – his third hit of the day –
to score Kurt Suzuki and Joe Turgeon.
The Fullerton-Long Beach series gets underway on Friday at 7 p.m. at Goodwin
Field. The series will continue on Saturday at 6 p.m. and conclude on
Sunday at 5 p.m.
