Jason Corapci went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Danny Dorn drilled a three-run
homer as second-ranked Cal State Fullerton beat UCLA, 13-2, in a nonconference
game at Goodwin Field Tuesday night.
The Titans, who have won seven of their last eight, improved to 31-8 overall
while improving their record at Goodwin Field to 19-0. UCLA dropped its
seventh straight game to fall to 17-23.
Darric Merrell, who allowed a pair of runs on eight hits in a predetermined
three innings, earned the win to improve to 3-0. Titan pitchers Travis
Ingle, Ricky Romero, Sean Martin and Chad Cordero combined for six innings
of three-hit shutout ball. UCLA's Daniel Miltenberger, who allowed seven
runs without retiring a batter, suffered the loss to fall to 0-1.
UCLA racked out four hits in the top of the first to grab a 1-0 lead,
but the Titans' first seven batters reached and scored in the bottom of
the frame. Miltenberger issued three walks, gave up a couple of singles
and departed after Dorn hit a three-run shot high over the right field
fence to give Fullerton a 7-1 lead.
Corapci, making his first start since April 2, singled in a run in the
Titans' two-run fourth and added a two-run double in a three-run fifth.
Shane Costa and Kurt Suzuki also had a pair of hits for the Titans. UCLA,
which used 24 players on the night, got a pair of hits from Brett McMillan,
Wes Whisler and Warren Trott.
Fullerton will host UC Santa Barbara in a three-game Big West set beginning
Thursday night.
