Titan Bullpen Dominates Bruins in 11-1 Win Apr. 22, 2003 Los Angeles, Calif.
Box Score
Richie Burgos had three doubles and the Cal State Fullerton bullpen retired
15 of 17 batters as the top-ranked Titans beat UCLA, 11-1, in a nonconference
game at Jackie Robinson Stadium Tuesday night.
The Titans, who have won seven in a row and 11 of their past 12, improved
to 35-8 overall and swept the three-game season series from the Bruins,
outscoring them, 31-4. UCLA fell to 19-25.
Travis Ingle, who hurled three perfect innings in relief of starter Darric
Merrell, picked up the win to improve to 2-0. Sean Martin pitched a perfect
eighth inning and Chad Cordero struck out three in the ninth while extending
his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 15.2 over his last 12 appearances.
Collectively, TItan pitchers retired 16 consecutive batters before Warren
Trott legged out an infield single with two outs in the ninth.
Fullerton jumped on the Bruins -- who took two of three from Arizona State
last weekend -- for three runs in the second. Jason Corapci, making his
first start of the season at shortstop, doubled in a pair of runs. Kyle
Boyer drilled his fourth home run of the season in the third to give Fullerton
a 4-0 lead.
UCLA closed the gap to 4-1 when Trott, a fifth-year senior, hit his first
career home run off Merrell. But the Titans blew it wide open in the sixth,
sending 10 men to the plate and scoring six runs to take a 10-1 lead.
Pinch-hitter Joe Turgeon doubled off the wall to drive in the Titans'
11th run in the top of the ninth.
Burgos, who was 5-for-5 in the Titans' game at UCLA last year, doubled
in his first three at bats before lining out to short in his fourth trip.
Boyer, Shane Costa, Kurt Suzuki and Corapci each had a pair of hits for
Fullerton.
The Titans will travel to San Luis Obispo this weekend for a three-game
Big West set with Cal Poly.
