Wes Littleton pitched seven solid innings and 13 different Titans had
hits as No. 6 Cal State Fullerton pounded UNLV, 23-3, in a nonconference
game at Earl E. Wilson Stadium Friday night.
The Titans ran their perfect record to 7-0 to mark the best start in their
28-year Division I history. The 1977 team went 6-0 to begin the season.
UNLV fell to 5-2 and had its four-game winning streak snapped. Fullerton
has won the last 11 meetings with UNLV, outscoring the Rebels, 151-36,
over that stretch.
Fullerton, which still has not trailed this season, built a 16-2 lead
through four innings. The Titans did not score in the fifth, but added
seven more run over the sixth and seventh innings to cap the scoring.
Littleton (2-0) allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings while striking
out six. John Estes made his collegiate debut and pitched the final two
innings. Robbie Van (0-1) took the loss for the Rebels.
The Titans used all 16 position players that made the trip and 13 had
hits. Shane Costa was 3-for-7 with a double, homer, four RBI and four
runs scored. Danny Dorn was 3-for-3 with a walk and HBP and has reached
base safely in 14 of his last 15 plate appearances. Other highlights were
provided by Sergio Pedroza, who drilled his first collegiate home run
in a pinch-hitting role and Eric Echevarria, a bullpen catcher who made
his first career plate appearance (he struck out).
Fullerton and UNLV will play the second game of the three-game set on
Saturday at 2 p.m.
