Titans Still Perfect after 14-1 Rout of Rebels Feb. 15, 2003 Las Vegas, Nev.
Box Score
Ryan Schreppel pitched five solid innings to pick up his third win and
six Titans had multiple hits as sixth-ranked Cal State Fullerton pounded
UNLV, 14-1, in a nonconference game at Earl E. Wilson Stadium Saturday
afternoon.
The Titans, off to the best start in their 28-year Division I history,
improved to 8-0, while UNLV fell to 5-3. The Titans have won 12 consecutive
games against the Rebels and have outscored them, 78-8, in the past five
meetings. Fullerton's scoring binge has seen it outscore opponents, 94-16,
this year and the Titans still have yet to trail in a game.
Schreppel, the freshman lefty out of Stockton, improved to 3-0. He allowed
just one run on three hits in five innings of work and retired 10 consecutive
batters over one stretch. He also struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Jason Windsor pitched three scoreless innings of one-hit ball before Chad
Cordero pitched a perfect ninth.
Kyle Boyer and Kurt Suzuki each had three hits to lead the 17-hit attack.
Justin Turner reached base six times with a pair of hits and four walks.
Ronnie Prettyman drove in a game-high three runs.
For the second consecutive day, the Titans again took advantage of UNLV
mistakes to take an early lead. Rebel third baseman Pat Dobson was charged
with a throwing error on the first play of the game which allowed Justin
Smyres to reach second base. A pair of wild pitches by Vose (1-2) allowed
Smyres to score the game's first run.
Fullerton's second run also went down in the books as an unearned run.
Smyres singled with one out in the third, moved to second on another wild
pitch by Vose (who had four on the day), stole third and scored when catcher
Stephen Ghutzman's attempted pickoff ricocheted off Smyres into foul territory.
Fullerton made its lead more comfortable with a three-run fourth inning.
Catcher Kurt Suzuki had the key hit, a two-run single through the left
side that marked Suzuki's first hit of the season. The Titans made it
a 9-0 game in the fifth, thanks to three consecutive hits to open the
frame, and added a game-high five runs in the ninth to seal the rout.
UNLV's lone run came home in the bottom of the fifth when Eric Nielsen
doubled in Dobson.
Fullerton will try for its third consecutive series sweep on Sunday, when
the Titans and Rebels wrap up their series at 1 p.m.
