Fourth-Ranked Titans Roll to 6-1 Win over Toreros Mar. 25, 2003 San Diego, Calif.
Box Score
Ricky Romero pitched three scoreless innings to earn his second victory
and eight of Cal State Fullerton's nine starters had hits as the fourth-ranked
Titans beat San Diego, 6-1, in a nonconference game at Cunningham Stadium
Tuesday afternoon.
Fullerton, which has won four consecutive games, improved to 22-5 while
San Diego fell to 14-17.
Romero (2-0), who was predesignated to throw fewer than five innings,
allowed just a pair of hits and faced one batter over the minimum in his
three innings of work. Travis Ingle, Sean Martin and Chad Cordero finished
things off for the Titans. San Diego starter Brett Gillespie suffered
the loss to fall to 0-2.
Even though his day was done, Romero was the pitcher of record when the
Titans broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI-single
by Kurt Suzuki.
The Titans got to San Diego's bullpen in the sixth to break open a one-run
game. Shane Costa driled a first-pitch single up the middle to chase Gillespie.
After Costa's stolen base -- one of six by the Titans on the day -- and
a sac bunt by Boyer, Richie Burgos doubled in Costa for the Titans' second
run. Torero third baseman Jamie Hesselgesser couldn't glove Kurt Suzuki's
grounder and was charged with an error, which opened the door for three
unearned runs and a 6-0 Titan lead.
San Diego scored its lone run off Sean Martin in the seventh when Jose
Ortega doubled in Zach Dobek, who himself had doubed to open the frame.
Perhaps the Toreros' highlight came in the fifth, when San Diego turned
a triple play, the first in a Titan game in several years. With runners
on first and third, Justin Turner struck out swinging for the first out.
San Diego catcher Josh Hansen quickly threw to second to gun down Ronnie
Prettyman trying to steal and second baseman Ben Quinto returned the ball
to Hansen just in time to get Sergio Pedroza trying to score on the back
end of the play.
Fullerton will travel to Blair Field for a nonconference series with fifth-ranked
Long Beach State this weekend.
